“People are more difficult to work with than machines. And when you break a person, he can't be fixed.”
― Rick Riordan
Imagine a world where machines are able to directly communicate with each other - high accuracy, validity and reliability - a machine to machine economy (M2M).
This world isn't actually too far away, probably less than a decade. Automation has always played a big role in factories. But, now we are on the cusp of reaching a whole new level. As Artificial Intelligence and IoT increases in sophistication business processes at all stages can be combined with machines and allow for optimisation of micro to macro decisions that humans have traditionally made. For example, take the idea of a 'smart supermarket'. All the shelves would have sensors and immediately inform the back storeroom when an item is running low or has reached its expiry parameters. However, here is the trick. In the back storeroom there is no people or human employees that receive the request for a refill or replacement - it is more machines! And these machines will also be able to communicate directly with the machines located across the country/world which supply all of the grocery items. So when a new order needs to be filled it will be filled by the machine! To add an additional layer, the machines at the supermarket will also be able to connect directly with your fridge/pantry. If it is decided that you are running low on a certain item or your 'smart home' records that you need ingredients to make a chocolate cake, without you even thinking twice you will have the ingredients directly delivered to you, hassle free! And mind you, by this stage, it will probably be the machines in your kitchen making the chocolate cake too!!!
The opportunities this field will create are only limited by our imaginations. The more creative we are the more exotic and ultimately exciting the outcomes.
Although not very well known currently, the compound word 'blockchain' will soon be one of the most commonly and widely acknowledged terms across all industries in all societies.
In the most basic form, a blockchain is a decentralised and public ledger that is used to record transactions. These transactions are not just monetary but can involve any data transaction. The transactions are verified by the nodes in the network and added to the blockchain through a variety of different consensus algorithms.
The transparency and safety of this system comes through the use of asymmetric cryptography and also the fact that every block in the chain is specifically linked to the previous one i.e. block number 3 contains the address and hash of block number 2. This means that if there was ever a malicious attack and someone tried to change the information/data stored in a block they would also have to subsequently alter all the other blocks in the chain on every single node (there are thousands to millions of nodes across the world!).
This revolutionary technology does not only mean that at its core the data stored on the computer is extremely safe and protected but also can help quash those sci-fi A.I. conspiracies that hypothesise robots eventually taking over the world. With the blockchain this will almost be impossible. And so with that in mind, the ability for machines to integrate further into our society and help create a better civilisation will bring much larger positivity and efficaciousness.
Blockchain technology has applications across all aspects of society and soon will be incorporated almost everywhere.
So to pose the question one last time - why is blockchain technology so revolutionary? Because it is innovative, visionary and the first platform to propel us humans into the next stage of technological evolution.
To really and truly make an impact on this world you have to make huge sacrifices - there is no other way.
Steve Jobs was one of the most visionary and ingenious humans to ever walk the Earth. His mantra of passion and fearlessness will continue to be idolised by entrepreneurs well into the future.
I have always viewed a 9-5 job as something far scarier than starting a crazy company and failing. Our mindset is the number one determinator of our future. To alter this reality we must first alter our mindsets. We must realise what true risk and opportunity is and not be constrained by the so called 'normalcies' that society heavily imposes.
When you really think about it enough - is there really much risk in going after your dreams and ambitions? If we only have once chance on this Earth, why should we waste our time doing things that we don't truly love or that won't help forward society towards achieving better?
Let's seek the unknown, crusade a campaign of initiative and desire for greatness!
Sometimes I can't fathom the fact that every single day I am walking past random people on the street and I have no idea who they are, yet they themselves have a whole life story. They have a favourite colour, a best friend, a trial that they had to overcome, a talent, a job, things that make them annoyed, a favourite restaurant - a whole entire LIFE.
I know it might sound strange, but sometimes it really freaks me out to think that there is so much going on in the world and most of the time us as individuals have no idea of the specific circumstances that are occurring.
What I find even more fascinating is the fact that each and everyone of us has our own desires, ambitions and passions. And sometimes I find it hard to fathom why I am the way I am. Why was I born with the ambition and desires I have and not the ambition and desires of the person walking next to me?
For a while I really tried to understand why this was so, but of course finding the answer was not easy. Although I am yet to actually find an answer to this question that I have, what I have been able to understand is that I was born this way for a reason. And I feel that it is my responsibility to take on the challenge of the ambition that I have and really do something with it, not just talk or dream about doing something with it... but actually do it!
There is a famous saying, 'actions speak louder than words'. Although commonly used, what I have observed over my time on Earth is that most people speak a lot of words but never ever follow through. Why they don't follow through? A variety of factors and circumstances must come into play. Translating syllables spoken by our tongues to real tangible actions is a lot more difficult than one might first assume. So, when you come across people in life that are able to carry through with what they say it serves as a great inspiration - these are the true hustlers and drivers of the world and the people that will continue to pursue for the greater good of humanity, pushing boundaries and overcoming impossible hurdles. These are the type of people I want to learn from, be around and eventually (Because I am still not 100% there yet) fully become.
The Internet of Things (IoT) seems to becoming more and more popular... but what about IoNT... The Internet of Nano Things! Now that is something worth writing about.
Nanotechnology is allowing for the next big innovation in technology in almost all industries. Combining nanotechnology with communication capabilities gives you IoNT. This crossover will allow for a whole new paradigm shift and is where new brilliant discoveries will come about.
Although still an undiscovered and niche market, this industry is growing exponentially, expected to reach $9.9 billion by 2020. IoNT will also hold a big weight in smart factories. For instance, a smart factory will employ IoNT devices to monitor temperature, humidity, gaseous fumes, water quality and carbon emissions. This will ensure optimisation of the factory in all areas and extreme efficiency in the factories operations.
One area I am particularly interested in is nano manufacturing. Manufacturing materials at this scale can allow for stronger, lighter, more durable, ultraviolet and infrared resistant products to be made. Graphene is currently the strongest material in the world, over 200 times stronger than steel. It is an allotrope of Carbon, with the atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice. Nano manufacturing of graphene is allowing for really exciting advancements of its properties. Pristine, high-quality graphene with its inherent impermeability poses challenges in fabricating dense films and thick parts with high electrical conductivity due to the difficulty in removing trapped air and/or solvents used in various fabrication methods. To negate this, nano-holes are created with a diameter of 15nm and serve as pathways for the rapid removal of gases and liquids.
Graphene is also allowing for great progress in the space field - especially in regards to moonshot ideas. One example is the idea of a space elevator. A space elevator would allow for a more efficient Earth-to-space operating system and also allow for lower energy consumption - there won't be a need for rockets. The elevator would consist of an anchor connected to Earth and attached to a tether extending into space. The elevator would rotate with the Earth to ensure that it remains vertical.
Graphene combined with nanotechnology is the material that would allow for this idea to become a reality.
Success is never an accident. It is carefully and meticulously planned.
Many people approach the world with a huge misconception. That misconception is that they have no control over their destiny or path and that if the world throws them an obstacle or challenge, they will be left defeated with no way to move forward. These people also religiously stick by the societal norms that are imposed on everyone since birth i.e. getting a job, sleeping 8 hours every night, only eating 'breakfast' foods for breakfast ~ stupid stuff like this!
What I have learnt is that your mindset is absolutely EVERYTHING.
Although it might sound crazy, I so blindly believe that if you put forward a desire or want to the universe, the universe will respond. Maybe not in the way that you expected or exactly wanted, but if your desire is strong enough and is for the right reasons, things will fall into place. Your desire must be constant, be truthful, be possessing your every thought and determining your every action. You must be prepared to sacrifice and surrender to your desire and burn all other avenues so you have no choice but to carry out what is in your mind.
The story of Edwin C. Barnes is one that perfectly encapsulates what is really means to have a passion and desire so great that you have no choice but to act immediately. Barnes had one goal and desire in his mind - to become a business associate of the great inventor, Thomas Edison. Despite having no money and absolutely no connection with Edison, he decided to find his way to Edison's office anyway - and when he did he stood in front of Edison and told him prophetically that he had come to go into business along side him. Barnes' desire was not a mere hope or wish, it was rather a desire that transcended all dimensions and so would ensure him success.
Barnes worked under Edison for two years, proving his worth and significance. When his opportunity to impress Edison arose, he ceased it with the greatest determination and so finally implemented his desire- achieving a business partnership with the great inventor.
Barnes' success began with himself. It began with his own mindset. From the minute he met Edison, Barnes viewed himself as a business partner of the inventor, not merely an admin/office worker underneath him. This is a powerful illustration of what a definite desire and goal can do. Visualising and believing that this desire is true will ensure you success, as every step and action you take will be furthering yourself towards your achievement of this desire.
Stop being bounded by the impossible or the constraints of society - Change your mindset and start really visualising the future that you want. If you visual your desires they will have a way of establishing themselves in the physical world. Trust me, it will do you wonders.
